Crocodylians are the archosaur cousins of Dinosaurs, and they are no less amazing and cool. Although they seem like a crossing between a dragon and a giant lizard there is more to them than meets the eye.
There is a shortage of high-quality crocodylian figures in the market. This gap was partially filled by Rebor’s high-end display models of Deinosuchus (a superb model, a must for every croc lover and dinosaur models collector), Sarcosuchus and American Alligator, but they are big and expensive and are not suited for recreational play. Papo and Safari Ltd made good efforts in the range of playable croc figures but there is room for improvement in the models (size, details, and pose).
When I stumbled on Mojo Fun crocodile, I knew it need a thorough inspection so I ordered one from Everything Dinosaur, and the service was excellent – as usual.
The model itself is about 15 cm long, which is quite small. The colors are excellent and of very high quality. This crocodile has an olive-green hue but a solid one, which fit it quite nicely. A black-wash is applied giving the croc a shining appearance. The level of detail is very high relative to the figure size. The osteoderms and scales are finely sculptured and executed quite well. The sculpting of the head is good, with articulated jaw and inner-mouth details, including the teeth. As far as I can tell, the model is very accurate and represents the anatomy of a true crocodile accurately. So it seems like almost the perfect playable crocodile figure, and it would except for one big issue: its posture (or pose).
I didn’t like the pose because of the raised head, which could be interpreted as a submission pose (especially when the jaws are closed), and as I imagine my croc to be fierce and powerful, a submission pose is out of the question. However, with the jaws open one can also interpret it as a threating posture. The tail is 90 degrees curled to the left and since it is stiff it makes the models asymmetric and viewable from only one direction (the head also tilts leftward). This makes it somewhat less suitable for recreational play – the pose enforces limits on the imaginable situations this croc takes part in.
So as a display figure, it is highly recommended: high levels of accuracy, details and color, at an affordable (even cheap) price. I didn’t like the pose but all other aspects are excellent and it has the “wow” effect. I would give a grade of 92/100.
