This BOTM figure seems to be unpopular and I sat on the fence for a long while before succumbing to its enigmatic appeal. It is also quite pricey of course. But now I have it I think the hesitation and potential dislike is unfounded.
Beasts of the Mesozoic figures, perhaps especially the Ceratopsians, have two very distinct levels of appeal. Firstly, as large, beautifully sculpted and reasonably scientifically accurate, articulated figures. Their scientific accuracy is focused on the head sculpts, while other body parts conform to a limited range of ‘standard’ body sizes. But we are happy to accept these compromises in the interests of optimised production costs. The second level of appeal is as dramatic and impactful pieces of paleo art. Throughout this series the Creative Beasts artistic team have used bold, riotous and controversial paint apps and rarely been constrained by the drab, muted colours that one might expect to have seen in these animals. Consequently we have a range of figures that demand attention on the shelf. To be a Beasts of the Mesozoic fan, as we are in droves, one has to embrace both these levels of appeal, the wonderful articulated sculpts and the pop art.
So, ‘Steelhorn’ is obviously very bright vivid green. But those greens have variation of palette and provide a striking and complex pattern on the head, particularly if you fit the silver brow horns. In the hand, or on the shelf, this figure is bold and beautiful, perhaps even more so as a singular display item. In fact, you could probably say that about many of them. Their individual impact is enhanced by solo display against a neutral background and slightly depreciated when lined up closely alongside each other as most of us have to do.
Ultimately, only you can decide whether you desire to have a big green Trike in your collection, but I think it’s a stunning and highly underrated piece. Enjoy!!
